Over the last 15 years, all Enterprises have connected their staff to the Internet – typically via PCs/laptops at workstations connected via Ethernet. The Internet connectivity comes with VPNs, and a range of corporate security measures – firewalls, virus and spam filters, content filtering, etc. Today, desktop Internet connectivity for staff is well surrounded by corporate policy and appropriate safeguards.
The smartphone and tablet age, which has burst upon us, has created an immediate problem – a lot of staff Internet connectivity is now via these devices connected to expensive 3G and 4G mobile broadband services, which are often quite outside the control of the company’s existing security and controls. This has been a boon for the telcos, but at a rapidly growing cost to the Enterprise.
These smartphones and tablets are all WiFi capable – which creates an opportunity for the Enterprise to winback some measure of control over the data services to these devices, and reduce the cost of Internet connectivity by having the devices attach to WiFi when on the company premises, and thereby have the data traverse the Enterprise’s existing fixed infrastructure at low marginal cost.
An additional opportunity for the Enterprise with its managed WiFi service is to enable easy Internet access by visitors, clients or partners whilst on the company premises. This can be a highly valued facility for collaborative work with partners, meetings with suppliers or customers, or supporting visitors.
It’s critical to have the right WiFi solution – it needs to be carrier grade, which means highly reliable and able to deliver sustained throughput performance. Conventional, domestic grade WiFi technology delivers notoriously poor performance especially in “noisy” environments where there are many competing radio signals. Something much better is required.
