Telstra Payphones are interested in exactly that question, and have worked with PieNetworks to undertake a market assessment of a next generation public payphone in a number of airports across Australia.
The PieNetworks Webphone brings together a range of functionality and service capabilities in a unique product offering – which for Telstra and its customers means more reasons to use the device, and more opportunities for revenue generation.
The core incremental service offering (beyond traditional payphone telephony) Telstra have evaluated is managed Internet access – which means customers have easy on-demand paid Internet access. The large screen also provides opportunities for advertising specific promotions and offers (which can be targeted by machine location or group of machines), and exposure of specific applications and content.
Telstra has chosen to offer a number of Telstra and BigPond services free of any customer usage charges, which has been a great way of promoting these services and encouraging customers to become familiar with using the device.
The full 22” touch screen interface opens up new possibilities for innovative application interfaces, although the standard keyboard and trackpad are also provided as part of the unit.
Telstra have judged the 4 month market assessment exercise a success, and are now examining opportunities for a further rollout of the PieNetworks Webphone in suitable locations across Australia.
